BUILDERS - CRAFTSMEN - ARTISANS in the LANGUEDOC
Builders
in the Languedoc, like anywhere else, are a breed unto themselves.
The usual words of caution apply:
*
Always establish whether your builder has the necessary paperwork:
does he have a SIRET n° first off? Is he declared with the
Chambre de Métiers as a bona fide craftsman? Can he guarantee
you la 'décennale', a ten-year guarantee on structural work
carried out? If in doubt a quick ring to the local Mairie
or Chambre de Métiers should sort it out.
*
Once you have your man (or woman) then you've got to agree
on what's to be done. Don't be afraid to draw up an agreement
in writing; make plans and have the builder counter-sign
them. Above all make sure you agree on a price and a finish
date before starting. If it's a construction company that
you're dealing with you should even write in a penalty clause
whereby they pay you if the finish date is overrun.
*
In general, French builders will be cheaper than 'English'
ones: you're paying extra for being able to speak English
with them. Get at least 5 quotes for every job before you
choose.
